Akoya pearls are salt water pearls cultured majorly in Japan. A full-grown Akoya oyster ranges from 8-13 cms and yields 1 to 2 pearls per harvest. The Akoya oyster is nucleated with a bead and is often found in round shape.
Akoya oyster cultured produces round pearls of high luster with sizes ranging from 1mm to 11mm. Average Akoya pearl will be around 7mm. It can be round, oval, semi-baroque and baroque – primarily round shape. The color is mostly, white or cream with hints of pink and green and sometimes in silver overtones.
Akoyas are more valuable than freshwater pearls but standing third next to South Sea and Tahitian pearls.
